The Department of Tourism Region 1 would like to clarify the figures indicated in the recent article of Northbound Philippines News Online published in on 18 April 2018 regarding the 2017 Visitor Arrivals for the Region.

As of March 31, 2018 (the cut-off date for the submission of 2017 Reports on Visitor Arrivals) the region has recorded a total of Two Million Three Hundred Fifty Nine Thousand Seven Hundred Forty Four (2, 359, 744) visitors spending at least one (1) night in the region. Of the total number, Pangasinan has the highest share with 32.17% percent followed by Ilocos Norte with 27.0% percent, La Union with 24.13% and Ilocos Sur with 16.17 % share.

The regional figure of 995,710 total tourist arrival mentioned in the news article was only a partial and incomplete report submitted to the Philippine Statistical Authority as of December 31, 2017 pending the submission of final reports using the correct report templates from the various LGU data sources.

The various tourist attractions, accommodation establishments, city/ municipal government units as well as the provincial government units as data sources for visitor arrivals, are given up to March 31 of the following year to complete their visitor arrival reports, prior to submission of final reports to data users like PSA, NEDA, DOT-OTDPRIM and others. Quarterly and or/ seasonal reports are also provided to various requesting entities and data users upon request, however, remarks are indicated therein to clarify the extent or coverage of the data being reported as PARTIAL OR INCOMPLETE as of the date the report was requested.

As of this post, the DOT Regional Office 1 has already reached out to the concerned Government Agencies mentioned in the news article, who are also taking measures to clarify the statement with the publisher/ writer.
